Emergency Action Plan

Emergency Preparedness

On Monday, we will begin talking about being prepared for an emergency that may occur during athletics.  Something to think about over the weekend:

Why is it important to have an emergency action plan for athletics?

What is SB 82?

Part of being an athletic trainer is knowing what to do in case of an emergency and establishing and emergency action plan in case of such emergency.  It is also vital for coaches and athletes to be trained on this plan as well.  Do you know what to do in case of an emergency?

Facility Design

Today we took a tour of our athletic and athletic training facilities which will lead into our lesson and project for designing an athletic training room.  There are many areas needed for many different things and the design of an athletic training room is essential in assisting the athletic training staff with mulit-tasking (providing treatments while having athletes rehab, etc).

Tomorrow, we will meet in the library to start our research on various athletic training room and how they are designed to grasp the understanding of the variety of athletic training room that are out there.

Monday…

On monday, we will talk about heat illness and how the affect athletes at all levels.  Some questions to think about over the weekend:

1.  How much water does the average person lose in a day?  An athlete?

2.  What are heat illnesses and how do they affect me?

3.  How can I prevent heat illnesses?

The questions and more will be answer on Monday!  Make sure you bring your interactive notebooks.

Just in case your wondering…..

Our discussion of the roles and responsibilities of an athletic trainer go well beyond the many things we went over today in class.  Athletic trainers are part physical therapist, part sport psychologist, part nurse, part doctor, part coach, and even part parent.  There is so much that athletic trainers do that just ice and tapping – we are the foundation to any sports program.

Tomorrow (8/28/09) we will start creating our interactive notebooks for this class.  See you in class!
